I remember back in Tacoma gangs used to do that to mark their "turf." Or sometimes, as Jagvar said, "Fuck shoes."

Wiki says something about keeping ghosts out of the house they are in front of.

It's usually put up by gangs or drug users to mark a meeting spot. Nothing funny about it.

This is how you know to lock the doors, roll up the windows, and get out of that neighborhood. Among other things.

I'll buy that for a dollar.

Here in Puerto Rico some say it is used to mark drug turfs. Another and more reasonable explanation is just kids having fun and hanging their shoes there. Here is a link with answers from yahoo users from different parts of Latin America (Google Translation to English):

I've heard that over here it's to mark a brothel. Not sure whether that's true or not though.

Reminds me of this. I love that movie.

Yup. You don't really see this too often in a more affluent neighborhood.

It'll either be prostitutes, drugs or a gang meet.
What could possibly go wrong?

"Slang Hang" as the kids call it. I have also done this. Whenever I blew out a pair of skate shoes they went up at our local spots.

"Graduating seniors mark this transition in their lives by leaving something of themselves behind; namely, their shoes."

You used to see army boots around bases, because when soldiers ETS'd they would string up a pair of boots. That whole, never gonna use these again, thing.

I think it's used near me as a drug house marking. This sketchy house full of rich white kids in their mid-twenties had shoes over the power line in front of their house for a while. Rich white kids I've known love pushing drugs, despite their parents giving them everything so I'm gonna assume the shoes were used to direct folks to the dealer's casa.

During cross country practice in high school, many of us would take off our shoes to do sprints because grass feels REEL NAS on bare feet. Anyway, we'd occasionally tie someone's shoes together and throw them up in trees to be funny.
Don't let the high average GPAs fool you, XC kids are douchewads.
